I think you are in the initial stage of your SEO project or possibly developing your personal site and are currently stuck with the keyword research part. You might have plenty of questions, such as what my keyword search volume should be, how to check those volumes, and whether that keyword matches my website’s intent or not.
Let me tell you my point of view on that. I am Ram Adithyan, an SEO Freelancer in chennai.
Key takeaways
1) A good search volume for the keywords is 3000.
2) The intent of the keyword is more important than the volume.
3) Analyze all the tools and come to the conclusion about which tool is reliable.
4) Find the search volume with the help of GSC.
5) The role of secondary keywords in search volume.
Good Search volume for a Keyword – Founded
A good search volume for a keyword would be 2000+. If you rank at the top of the Google search results, you might get 20-30% of the clicks. Probably, you might get around 500 clicks.
Always calculate your traffic goal. If you want to achieve 5000 in traffic by the end of 3 months, plan accordingly. Target 10 keywords with a 2000 search volume each and try to rank at the top.
Keyword intent matters !
If you ask me which is a good search volume for a keyword to start with, my answer would be 50. Yeah, of course, it is
I will always check intent rather than volume. If you get a good intent keyword with low difficulty as well as 3000+ search volume, this will be called a low-hanging keyword.
For example: Assume you are going to rank your on-page SEO service page. So you have planned to write more about on-page SEO, and you have the following keywords in your hand:
– How to optimize meta tags – Volume 2000, Difficulty – 27
– How to outreach for backlinks – Volume 4800, Difficulty – 18
From the above keywords, I should choose the 1st one instead of the 2nd because it aligns with my end goal. Learning how to do SEO keyword research and selecting the right keyword won’t be that hard.
Keyword Search volume from different tools
Here is the keyword data sourced from multiple keyword research tools.
Keyword : On page SEO Service
Tool | Search volume | KD |
Semrush | 1900 | 38 |
Ahref | less than 1000 | Medium |
Wordstream | 3600 | Low ( based on Ads) |
Ubersuggest | 1900 | 50 |
Google Keyword planner | 1000 – 10000 | Low ( based on Ads) |
Actually, each tool shows the results with the help of the data scraped by their respective crawlers.
Where can I find the real search volume of my keyword
I will personally suggest you guys to try all the tools. ie) take a keyword and find it search volume in all the above mentioned tools.
Once you publish the blog it ranks consistently in the 1 st page of google. Then you might come to a conclusion based on the impression in GSC. So you yourself have data which tool is close to accurate.
From my perspective, SEMrush delivers highly relevant data compared to others for keyword research. (Note: This is based on personal experience and not intended as a promotional statement.)
Through GSC of contemporaries
Here is another fantastic idea to find the search volume of a keyword before publishing a blog on your website. But it has a few constraints.
If you are an SEO freelancer or SEO agency and targeting a specific sector for your service, you might have multiple clients in the same niche.
Through the search console of high authority sites in the same niche, you can obtain keywords that even premium tools might not provide.
To know its difficulty, just search the keyword in SERP and then look at how many results on the page have the exact keyword in the title. Then, come to a rough calculation.
In the same way, you can also give it a try in Google Analytics.
How to choose Keywords based on search volume
Be clear that you are going to build a website for a purpose. By having a clear picture about the website, you will get to know what content matches your intent irrespective of search volume.
If you have a new domain with low authority, you should focus on difficulty rather than search volume. It’s always preferable to choose <20 difficulty for a low authority domain initially.
It would be nice if you guys can get the keywords with <20 difficulty and 100-10000 volume, which are called low-hanging keywords.
If you have a high authority domain and it’s an old domain, you can go for mid-level keywords, even <40 difficulty, and can pick high volume.
You will get traffic from related keyword as well
Every time we choose a keyword and rank our article, we also get clicks from secondary keywords as well, which are relevant to the main keyword.
So before selecting a keyword, also try to understand if the user uses any other keywords to search for the same thing as your main keyword.
You can also think about how you would search for the exact query on Google. It might sound funny, but trust me, it will work.
